Why I chose to move to Devonshire Retirement Residence

Jacqueline Beneteau, affectionately known as Jackie, came to Devonshire Retirement Residence two years ago during a time when her health was declining. After meeting with a hospital social worker who spoke highly of the community, she chose to begin with a respite stay. During that time, Jackie realized how much support she truly needed. Feeling welcomed by management and surrounded by caring staff made her decision to become a permanent resident both clear and comforting.

A smooth and welcoming transition

The transition was not easy at first. Having always valued her independence, Jackie worried she might be losing control of her daily life. What she discovered instead was that through activities, friendships, and community involvement, she maintained her independence and personal well-being. Becoming more social helped her grow more confident and outgoing, opening the door to a new and fulfilling chapter.

My favourite part of life here

Jackie’s favourite part of life at Devonshire is the close circle of friendships she has formed. Residents gather for watch parties, visit one another’s suites, and share stories from both past and present. These relationships are built on trust, understanding, and genuine support—creating a true sense of home.

Activities I enjoy and staying connected

Jackie finds joy in expressive painting classes, lively music socials, games filled with laughter, and special outings to the casino, Legion, and local mall. These experiences bring back the simple joy of living fully and independently, with new opportunities always unfolding.

A lifelong traveler, she has explored Fiji, New Zealand, Hawaii, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, and the Dominican Republic. Sharing travel memories and hearing the stories of others sparks meaningful conversations and lasting connections.

Advice for someone considering retirement living

Jackie’s advice is heartfelt and practical: try a respite stay, meet the staff, explore the programs, and ensure the community truly fits your personality and needs. For her, Devonshire has become a place of belonging, independence, and renewed joy—proof that retirement can be a beginning, not an ending.

The meaningful work and connections that shaped my life

Jackie is a retired elementary school teacher with more than thirty years of service. She specialized in teaching French as a second language and spent a year teaching in Sydney, Australia through an international teacher exchange program. Her passion for learning and connection shaped every chapter of her life.

Who inspires me now

Jackie’s inspiration comes from the friendships, activities, and community involvement that surround her each day, helping her grow more confident and outgoing.

Rediscovering friendship and connection

Through watch parties, shared visits, and storytelling, Jackie has rediscovered meaningful friendship and connection. Becoming more social has strengthened her sense of belonging and personal confidence.
